What Happens When You Don’t Give Kids Tests?

By Linda Dobson

FlunkPaper testsAt first, it’s unthinkable; what do you mean, don’t give kids standardized tests? At first, there’s always the same question: “How will you know if they’re learning?”

Think about this. After you left the school institution and its standardized tests behind, how did your first, second, or tenth employer know you were learning your job? Were you forced to sit down and fill in a bubble test so the employer could be sure? In rare cases, maybe. And if you knew that test was forthcoming, your actions, attitude and accomplishments would be focused on that test.

More likely, the question about your learning was answered for your employer(s) by your actions, attitude and accomplishments, unhindered by the threat of a test.

Since kids are people just like you,

what happens when you don’t give kids tests?

1. They don’t think a devastatingly narrow scope of topics are more important than others.

2. Because they don’t think a devastatingly narrow scope of topics are more important than others, they open their minds to learning about many topics.

3. They don’t come to believe that learning about non-tested topics is a waste of time.

4. They are freed to develop innate skills, interests, and passions.

5. With actions, attitude and accomplishments unhindered by the threat of a test, they enjoy learning, and they enjoy learning just about everything!
