WaitingForSupermanYou may want to see the movie, Waiting for Superman, when it comes to a theater near you. In the meantime, you can learn more about the film in a lengthy New York magazine article by John Heilemann titled “Schools: The Disaster Movie.”

The lead comment:

A debate has been raging over why our education system is failing. A new documentary by the director of An Inconvenient Truth throws fuel on the fire.

The American public school system is a total wreck. Everyone involved in the system has a different idea of how to fix it. Many many years ago John Holt, a school teacher who wanted reform, decided the system was so bad it couldn’t be reformed. He began to encourage parents to take their children out of school. He claimed the best thing about having “school” at home is that it isn’t a “school” at all.

Holt’s message is even more vital today as the public school situation has grown larger – and worse – in the past several decades.
