As parents we draw upon our love and choose from among the options the one we feel best serves our children.Because Christmas vacation has always been a very good time to begin homeschooling (Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!), this post is for those parents who are “thinking about” homeschooling. (Yes, Virginia’s mommy and daddy; we know you’re out there.)

In fact, we not only know you’re out there, we know that worries about whether or not it’s the best thing for your child(ren) are dancing through your head, getting all tangled up with those visions of sugar plums. As one of millions who has been there, I’ll let you in on a little secret. Consider it an early Christmas present.

First, set all of those worries aside for a moment. This leaves room for you to realize that since before your child was born, you’ve been making important decisions on his or her behalf: hospital or homebirth; breast or bottle; to vaccinate or not; bare feet or shoes; baseball or tennis? The list, you’ll realize, is endless. The thing is, as parents we draw upon our love and choose from among the options the one we feel best serves our children.

Does a parent ever know what lay down the paths of the options not chosen? No. And while we may from time to time ask ourselves “what if,” we don’t spend a whole lot of life energy second-guessing ourselves or we’d miss too many wonderful moments living in the now with our rapidly growing offspring.

There’s no question that the decision to homeschool is an important one. The secret? Do what you’ve always done. Draw upon your love and choose from among the options the one you feel best serves your child. Then don’t spend a whole lot of life energy second-guessing yourself – or allow others to second-guess you. You don’t want to miss too many wonderful moments living in the now with your rapidly growing offspring.

Merry Christmas.
