At last, someone with a bigger staff than I have (CNNMoney.com), has paid attention to what the economic crisis means in terms of national job loss within government schools. In “More than 80% of School Districts to Cut Jobs,” staff reporter Blake Ellis spotlights the upcoming 2010-2011 school year.

pinkslipThe American Association of School Administrators (AASA) surveyed school administrators from 49 states, who reported “a total of 275,000 education jobs are expected to be cut in 2011.” This figure pretty much negates the 300,000 jobs recently “saved or created by the government.”

The breakdown on types of job cuts:

54% teacher positions

9% support personnel – nurses, guidance counselors, etc.

5% administrative

31% “classified” – category that includes maintenance employees and cafeteria workers

Such job cuts are “projected to raise the average student-to-teacher ratio from 15:1 to 17:1, AASA said.”

53% of school districts in the survey predict they will not be hiring anyone new.

“Faced with continued budgetary constraints, school leaders across the nation are forced to consider an unprecedented level of layoffs that would negatively impact economic recovery and deal a devastating blow to public education,” said Dan Domenech, AASA Executive Director.

The article failed to mention that this is happening despite the additional $4 BILLION being pumped into the government system with Race to the Top. And with a cry for even more money watch the brief video by Robert Reich where he asks for a “government bailout” of government schools – interest free loans to be repaid when the economy recovers – as well as a $200 BILLION annual tax on financial transactions to also go down the government school money pit.

Isn’t it way past time to say, “Enough?”
