Five Money Myths that Trip Up Homeschoolers

by Carol Topp, HomeschoolCPA.com

As I think about time with my children, I’m reminded that they will not always be with us.  We don’t know what the future holds. That leads me to our final myth:

GirlandBookcase

If allowed, I'd fill another 6 foot bookcase in no time flat...

Myth # 5: I’ll use it someday.

Truth:  You don’t know what the future holds.

From www.lifeorganizers.com:  Ask yourself:

  1. Am I going to use it now or in the near future? Beware of buying things with the reasoning, ‘I’m not sure when I’ll use it, but I’ll use it someday.’

The homeschool market is growing so fast.  There is always something better coming along. I kick myself now for buying curriculum before my children needed it because now there is a new, improved edition. I try to tell myself, “If it’s that good, it will be there when I need it.  If not, something better will replace it”

2. Where is it going to go?  Make sure you have a clearly designated space otherwise it increases your clutter.

My husband limits me to one bookcase for homeschooling. He knows me well and is protecting me from myself. If allowed, I’d fill another 6 foot bookcase in no time flat and disregard these past five posts! So, because I am limited on real estate, I have to consider very carefully where each new book will go. I even asked the Videotext people if they could make thinner packages when their DVD versions came out! They didn’t.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these Five Money Myths and remember them as we enter the homeschool convention shopping season!
