The Lifetime Learning Companion:

The Best of the Home School Source Book

The following is the Foreword I wrote for Jean and Donn Reed’s classic homeschooling book. If you have not yet seen this, I hope this will inspire you to seek it out and let it help your family in your homeschooling  journey.

Foreword by Linda Dobson

LifetimeLearningCompanion homeschoolingIt’s always an honor to be asked to pen a book’s Foreword. It is, however, a humbling experience to be invited by Jean Reed to become even a minute part of this continuing labor of love first conceived by Jean and Donn Reed so many years ago.

I wish I could say I was aware of their early work while in grade school but, actually, it was my grade school-aged, first child’s education that set me on the path to discovering it. Kindergarten attendance was having a negative effect on this child who was rapidly changing from a pleasant and loving person into a stressed-out, aggressive and, most of all, unhappy child. Fortunately, I’d discovered homeschooling and, as I am wont to do, I set out to learn everything I could about it.

A generation ago, that was not as overwhelming as it has become today. Back then, a few large publishers had the good sense to publish the works of John Holt, David and Micki Colfax and Raymond Moore. Other equally valuable material was being self-published; homespun, rough around the edges, relating firsthand knowledge, and offering hopeful authors the opportunity to at least supplement the bank accounts of one income families determined to stay home and take responsibility for the education of their children while living in a two income society.

Much of that work has been lost and, of course, time has changed many things. Homeschooling grew up alongside the World Wide Web, so it’s a natural course of events for Jean to decide that her extensive lists of ever-changing resources should find a new home on the easily accessible Internet.

Homeschooling Resources for Your Family

I am ever so grateful, for those of you currently homeschooling and for all of the homeschooling families yet to come, that time has not altered the truth of this book’s content, and that Jean decided to devote the time, attention and love necessary to allow you to hold this updated classic in your hands.

Yes, Jean has accomplished the work, but she has not done it alone. While Donn is not physically with us, Donn and Jean’s minds and hearts continue to complement each other to inspire, support and, hopefully, help your mind stretch in directions it may not have reached if not for being treated to the honest, intelligent, often humorous commentary that rings as true today as it did over 20 years ago.

The book you hold in your hands now is a rare gift and a distinctive treat. Before you read, grab a cup of coffee or a nice herbal tea. Whether you are new to homeschooling or a seasoned veteran, discover how this family’s homeschooling journey is at once powerful, yet tender; solid, yet flexible; intellectual, yet emotional. Let the inherent freedom in this educational approach also lead you to provide for your children an education that is worth having.

Homeschooling Wisdom

The Lifetime Learning Companion: The Best of the Home School Source Book is also liberally sprinkled with thought-provoking quotes. One from Clifton Fadiman, author of New Lifetime Reading Plan, says, “When you reread a classic you do not see more in the book than you did before; you see more in you than there was before.”

This classic now in your possession has stood the test of time. Read it. Re-read it. Let it help you find in yourself what you need to embrace your family-centered, homeschooling journey with wisdom and love.
