Hi, Tamara,
It's a sad statement that one will have to be extremely careful from now on, but it's a fact of life. Hopefully you can do without a "free" computer...the safest option.

Our present federal government in Australia made a big deal about free laptops during the last election - don't know if they materialized. I thought they were just being generous (I'm a bit naive). The Prime Minister kept spouting about an education revolution. Since then, they have started publishing league tables on each school. Today our Deputy Prime Minister was talking about implementing school inspections and giving each child an identity number - it's sounding more Orwellian by the moment.

I was looking in to having my son do online for Highschool. That is all a family needs for social workers to be spying on them and hearing any family arguments. Religious freedom could be jeopardized by this kind of spying too. Makes you wonder why they would insist that you use their computers instead of your own.

good article, Linda. I would also add one of my concerns is that online schools use the computers and camera to communicate with their students. What is to prevent their employees from using this technology to spy on the families that are enrolled? They do tell families to put the computer in a family area where parents can observe the children's progress; what's to prevent them from observing the family's daily activities? the whole thing is just too, too creepy.
